Opportunities in Built Heritage: From Quayside Exploration to Digital Twins
Built heritage presents opportunities to explore the history of our cities, understand the conservation of existing structures and contribute to research shaping their future.
From guided exploration of Newcastle's historic Quayside to doctoral research into people-led digital twins for heritage conservation, these opportunities highlight different ways to engage with the preservation and sustainable management of our built environment.
Explore Built Heritage
Quayside Heritage Walk
Explore historic buildings, infrastructure, heritage conservation and urban regeneration through an informal educational and professional engagement activity.
The connection between these opportunities is thematic. The University of Bath PhD is an independent external research opportunity signposted by Northumbria Construct.
From historic merchant houses and industrial infrastructure to contemporary regeneration and adaptive reuse, the walk examines how the built environment reflects the city’s changing economic and social history.
Participants will explore landmarks including the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Tyne Bridge, The Close and Sandhill.
The event provides an informal opportunity to learn about heritage conservation, construction history and urban regeneration while connecting with fellow students and built-environment enthusiasts.
The walk is open to everyone. Optional social drinks may follow.

Explore how digital technologies can support the conservation and management of historic buildings and infrastructure. This University of Bath PhD investigates people-led digital twins for preventive conservation of built heritage assets.
The research brings together structural health monitoring, sensor data, inspection records, interactive visualisation and explainable artificial intelligence to inform conservation decisions.
Human-in-the-loop approaches keep engineers, conservation specialists and other stakeholders involved in interpreting information, assessing asset conditions and deciding when to intervene. The project supports professional judgement in managing historic structures.
