Thank you for taking the time to visit Northumbria Construct.
My journey into construction has allowed me to experience the profession from different perspectives—as a civil engineer delivering infrastructure projects, as a postgraduate student, and through working alongside professional institutions, universities and industry partners. Across those experiences, I found myself asking the same question:
How can academia and industry work more closely together to create greater value for both?
I saw students eager to engage with industry but unsure where to begin. I met professionals who were passionate about giving back but lacked structured opportunities to connect with the next generation. I also witnessed innovative ideas developed through research that had the potential to influence practice, alongside industry challenges that could inspire meaningful academic enquiry.
Those experiences shaped the idea behind Northumbria Construct. What began as the Bridge the Gap project during the APM Project Management Challenge gradually evolved into a wider vision: creating a platform that encourages meaningful engagement between academia and industry—not simply to improve employment outcomes, but to strengthen collaboration, encourage innovation and create lasting value for the built environment. Today, Northumbria Construct exists to bring together students, researchers, educators, professionals and organisations through shared learning, professional engagement and collaborative innovation. We believe that stronger relationships between these communities create opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom or the workplace.
Whether through industry engagement, research collaboration, mentoring, debates, volunteering, site visits or innovation-led projects, our goal is to create an environment where knowledge flows in both directions. Industry can help shape education, academia can help shape practice, and together they can inspire solutions to the challenges facing our profession Our purpose is to build stronger connections between people, ideas and organisations, creating opportunities for learning, innovation and professional growth that ultimately contribute to a more resilient and forward-looking construction industry. Thank you for being part of that journey.
Together, we can build the bridge to bridge the gap.
